Chapter 13

In the middle of the soot-smeared country kitchen, the acrid smell of smoke and the coppery smell of the walls shedding blood, Emma helped Meredith get Sloan to her feet and then offered a shoulder prop to Brockton when she noticed he clung to the chair back with a gloveless grip.

“You’re not wearing your gloves.” Emma took in the ruined kitchen but stepped closer to him to offer support to keep him steady as they fled.

“I don’t remember taking them off. Sorry about your house, Em. I tried.”

“I know you did.” With a trembling hand, as she keyed on his expression, she cupped his on the ridge of the chair back.

With a slight parting of his lips, he closed his eyes. “You’re not alone in this, Emma Janson.”

“You bet she’s not,” Sloan shook her head to regain her bearings.

“Em, the door won’t open. We busted the screen, then broke the pane right above the knob, and Sloan reached in and unlocked it.”

“Must have locked itself.” Sloan glanced back over her shoulder. “I don’t need you to prop me up, Meredith. I fainted and am fully conscious now.” She lolled her head on her neck and gaped at the thick crimson seeping down the walls and pooling on the floor. “But I’m kind of wishing I weren’t.”

Tears sprang to Emma’s eyes. “It’s ruined. What am I going to do?”

“We’ll fix it.” Meredith jiggled the knob and kicked the door. “Is there an inside key or something?”

Brockton squeezed Emma’s shoulder, left her side, and stumbled to the door. “Let me see if I can jar the latch free.” A zapping noise like an electrical wire shorting crackled as he rammed his shoulder and side against the door.

“If this happened to those poor owners and visitors at Claymore House, they didn’t have a chance.” Sloan took her turn, holding onto the back of the breakfast nook chair.

Emma muttered, “The new age lady on Stone Mountain knew about such things and still got caught in its web.”

“Don’t say web,” Meredith backpedaled as she faced the door to the dining room. “Those shadow things are far too much like spiders. The fire department and the police should be here any minute. They’ll get us out.”

“Uh,” Sloan sighed, “there was no signal. When the strangeness started, we lost the one bar of signal we usually get out here.”

The unplugged stove sizzled and crackled within the metal frame. The oven popped open, revealing flames releasing roiling black, sulfuric smoke.

“Yes, that’s what I’ve been smelling.” Sloan turned to the side.

“No one to the rescue.” Brockton staggered and lifted the chair. “Stand back.” He slammed the chair against the door.

“The stove’s unplugged,” Emma stated the obvious. What was happening here? If only she could fix it. Yet evil had invaded her home.

Meredith ducked her head and tipped closer as if to move away from something that remained unseen to the rest of them. “I don’t think it matters if we unplug appliances because whatever’s happening here isn’t of the natural realm.
